knew he wanted to develop a sculpture centred around an astronaut. The initial idea of incorporating dance into these sculptures came from watching his children at their ballet classes. The fluidity of their movement and graceful poses inspired Whatshisname began to develop different styles of dance into the sculptures. The creative exploration led Whatshisname to designing several different astronaut sculptures depicting different dances.
This particular piece depicts a couple frozen in time in a magical pose reminiscent of the movie Dirty Dancing. As this dance pose requires a lot of trust from both dancers, the piece can be interpreted in many ways. “One of my favourite ways is that the right partner can be uplifting and can elevate one another figuratively speaking” the artist told us.
