An adorable bronze sculpture with piebald grey patina by animal sculptor Roxy Winterburn.
A departure from her previous collection that saw Roxy Winterburn portray animals from Kenya, this emotional sculpture sees the artist explore a subject closer to home that also represents a more universal theme of protection and ‘Shelter’.
From the age of three Roxy rode ‘an old piebald horse called Kasey’. She notes that “I always felt as though he was looking after me and like he was full of wisdom. ‘Shelter’ represents that kind of a friendship – the horse being a guardian to the vulnerable child who in turn offers the horse a new lease of life and freedom”. This beautiful bond between humans and animals stretches across space and time as portrayed by the historical clothes of the child in this small sculpture. What’s more, she has harnessed her experience in artistry, chemistry and animal conservation to perfectly capture the piebald grey of her own horse through a delicate patina on bronze.
